Nurse Practitioners, also known as an NP, can perform medical examinations, diagnostic work ups, prescribe medication and perform minor basic procedures.   This Master level nursing degree is above and beyond that attained by a Registered nurse. Nurse practitioners can practice with autonomy, and have prescriptive and order authority.

Physicians Assistants, also known as a PA, is a Master level certification. A PA practices under the licensing authority of their supervising physician.  While they don't have the practice autonomy that a Nurse Practitioner has, they are allowed to perform many procedures, as well as medical examination and history. Physicians Assistants have prescription writing authority.
